about

The Unknown Cases were two musicians from Cologne, Helmut Zerlett and Stefan Krachten, who collaborated with African percussionist (and former Traffic and Can member), Reebop Kwaku Baah to produce the original version of “Masimbabele” in 1983. Released by Rough Trade, it was immediately picked up on by keen-eared DJs, including BBC Radio 1’s legendary John Peel, who declared it to be “one of those tracks you wish would never end”. In more recent years the track has featured in sets by the likes of Jamie XX and Ricardo Villalobos. The Sherwood remix comes from a late-80s reissue of the track, and serves in some ways as a companion piece to the earlier “Stebeni’s Theme” by African Head Charge - afrobeat bangers from another dimension.
