about

“Apparently, there are some people out there who don’t love The Fall,” John Peel announced on BBC Radio One once, after playing yet another song by his favourite band. “I spurn them with my toe.” The much-loved and highly prolific band were formed in Manchester in 1976. They are still going strong today, with their cantankerous genius of a frontman, Mark E. Smith, the only constant member. Adrian and Mark have a longstanding mutual admiration, with Adrian having produced a few different Fall tracks over the years and covering their manifesto “Repetition” track with Tackhead; turning M.E.S. onto a few crucial dub sides in the process.

In an interview with Slow Thrills fanzine, Adrian recalled how he came to work with The Fall: “It was through the Rough Trade offices. They distributed all the independent records in Britain at the time. I met Daniel Miller there prior to his founding Mute. The Fall were doing stuff for Geoff Travis (Rough Trade label boss) at the time. I was only 22 or 23 years old at the time - learning my trade so to speak – and Geoff said that I could help with additional production. What was almost unique about The Fall is that they never used any studio effects. It was almost anti-production. I didn't do that much on the record. The one thing I can claim is the idea to record through the toilet. It was in the boiler room so we had to switch the boiler off. Mark wanted it to sound crunching, like something on Sun records or a Link Wray record. I did it by using an off-mike recording of a speaker in the bathroom. He didn't want any reverbs or effects. He wanted it to sound 'dry'. I learnt a lot from him - I learnt less really is more.”
