about

The Beatnigs were a San Francisco band signed to the Dead Kennedys’ Alternative Tentacles label. They blended spoken word raps with avant-garde noise, including the use of power tools as percussion instruments! Frontman Michael Franti would go onto greater fame with the Disposable Heroes Of Hiphoprisy (who also recorded this song) and Spearhead, but this remix by the three-headed beast of Adrian Sherwood, Mark Stewart and Gary Clail remains a fearsomely raw example of beat-led sound collage. Adrian: “Bill Gilliam (Alternative Tentacles UK label manager) approached us to do this. I immediately liked it - it reminded me of The Last Poets and Gil Scott Heron. I’m really proud of this one - it still sounds great.” Franti would later make a guest appearance on the Dub Syndicate album Echomania.
