about

While Adrian Sherwood was doing some work for Tommy Boy Records in New York City, he connected with three American musicians who would become pivotal to the future direction of On-U Sound: Keith LeBlanc, Doug Wimbish and Skip McDonald.

The trio had already served time as one of thee great in-house studio bands: The Sugarhill Gang. During their tenure in the Sugar Hill Records studio, they provided the instrumental muscle for hip-hop foundation stones “Rapper’s Delight”, “The Message” and “White Lines”, amongst other epochal tracks. Going further back, McDonald and Wimbish also played in seminal disco act Wood, Brass & Steel. By the mid-80s however, the musicians were looking to strike out in a new direction, with LeBlanc experimenting with emerging sampling technology on his ground-breaking “No Sell Out” single, utilising cut-up Malcolm X speeches. After a productive meeting between LeBlanc and Sherwood at the CMJ conference, the British producer invited the Americans to join him in London. Once ensconced in the studio, they continued their sample-based explorations, with the producer as a fourth member manning the mixing desk. This is something they would also replicate in their live set-up, with Adrian dubbing and processing the musicians in real time as they played on stage. Cutting records simultaneously as Fats Comet (for the more dancefloor-oriented material) and Tackhead (for their more aggressive political tracks), they also became the second incarnation of The Maffia, the uncompromising backing band of Mark Stewart. The members were additionally involved in solo projects, session assignments, and appearances in other mysterious guises on the On-U roster, such as Barmy Army and Strange Parcels.

Of “Mind At The End Of The Tether”, the second Tackhead single, Adrian says: “This was one of the first tunes we recorded after Skip arrived in England, at Southern Studios in Wood Green. Very basic, Keith doing the drum programming, Kishi on keyboards, Doug and Skip on bass and guitar, and me on the mix, using an AMS to trigger samples.”
