about

Shriekback were formed in 1981 by Barry Andrews (formerly of XTC) and Dave Allen (formerly of Gang Of Four), enjoying some early success on the dance chart with their releases on seminal indie label Y (also responsible for the selections from Maximum Joy and The Slits heard on this compilation, and a connection to Mark Stewart as The Pop Group’s label); they later recorded for Arista and Island Records. DJ favourite “Mistah Linn He Dead” is an example of the remix-as-demolition-job, Sherwood rendering the original “Hand On My Heart” almost unrecognisable, and constructing something different from the debris. This is a method he would repeat during this period, most notably in the manner in which he took a small element of Depeche Mode’s “People Are People” and with great skill and humour built the oblique “Are People People?” remix with his own extensive overdubs. The title of this remix is presumably a reference to the titular drum machine, a prized (and at the time very costly) item in 80s recording studios. Of particular note is the electro-dub meltdown in the closing seconds of this track which really take the mix into another dimension and offers a tantalising glimpse of an unexplored musical pathway.
