about

Adrian and Mark Stewart first met as teenagers in the late 70s, when the former was working as a distributor of imported reggae vinyl. Mark subsequently made a name for himself with fiery agit-funk pioneers The Pop Group, and re-connected with Adrian when that group dissolved, contributing a memorable cameo to the first New Age Steppers album. He then recruited members of Creation Rebel as the initial incarnation of the Maffia on his own Sherwood-produced solo debut, Learning To Cope With Cowardice. Moving to Daniel Miller’s Mute label for his next release, Adrian recalls the recording of “Hypnotized” as being “a rhythm that Keith had built, originally for a Fats Comet track*. I was explaining to the American lads about the concept of ‘version’ and how important it was to reggae. A lot of the early Fats Comet rhythms ended up getting ‘versioned’ by Mark for As The Veneer Of Democracy Starts To Fade. That was an early way of applying that reggae technique to a non-reggae track.” Mark remembers the first time he heard the Fats Comet material: "It was this tape they'd done with like rockets going off and drums that sounded like steamhammers. I was going mental playing it to everyone."
