about

Flux Of Pink Indians were one of the key players in the UK anarcho-punk scene, having released their debut single on Crass Records and set up their own Spiderleg imprint to release the confrontational likes of The Fucking Cunts Treat Us Like Pricks - nearly getting Manchester’s iconic Eastern Bloc Records shutdown in the process for displaying the album in the window! They first encountered Adrian whilst working at John Loder’s Southern Studios in the mid-80s, which Adrian would use during ‘deadtime’ when the recording facility was otherwise unoccupied. While waiting for the studio’s daytime clients to finish their sessions, or stumbling blinking into the morning light at the end of another late night endless, Adrian made the acquaintance of artists such as The Jesus & Mary Chain, Conflict and a pre-fame Björk (then singing for Icelandic punk band KUKL).

By 1986, with an altered line-up and shortened name, Flux recruited Adrian, Bonjo I of African Head Charge and Style Scott of Dub Syndicate to help them forge a fresh musical direction. In addition to the heavyweight percussive augmentation that the On-U crew lent to proceedings, they broke further with punk orthodoxy by inviting Ray Shulman of progressive rockers Gentle Giant to add violin and trumpet. The resulting album, Uncarved Block (the first release on the band’s new label One Little Indian), is somewhat of a lost classic, informed by dub, ambient music and Taoist lyrics. There was a one-off revue-style live collaboration at London’s ULU. Adrian manned the mixing desk and Flux unveiled their new sound, alongside “the fragmented sound poetry collages of Annie Anxiety, the beat minimalism of D&V, abstract noise pop from A.R.Kane, and the sound of the future, Tackhead Sound System, bringing their tour de force heavy duty dub funk.”*
