about

The album concludes with an early alternate mix of one of the very best On-U cover versions, a fitting tribute to fallen comrades provided by the unbeatable combination of Bim Sherman on the mic with Dub Syndicate holding down the riddim. There’s no way we could ever beat Steve Barker’s story about the genesis of this track from his sleevenotes to Dub Syndicate’s Strike The Balance album, so we’re going to respectfully reproduce them here: “The tune was originally recorded by Lloyd Parks and produced by Joe Gibbs, seeing a release in the UK on the Cactus label. Adrian had borrowed a copy of the 7” single from Keith Stone, proprietor of the reggae shop Daddy Kool, based in Soho’s Dean Street, and at the time On-U was renting the basement of the shop as an office. It was late one morning when a bunch of people were sitting around killing time before going on somewhere else when one of the Daddy Kool shop assistants came into the office and said to Adrian: “That copy of ‘Mafia’ we lent you, well you know we were holding it for someone - well he’s come to collect it!” Adrian, momentarily slipping out of his normally affable persona, responded abruptly: “You can tell him to fuck off!” To which came the quick reply: “You tell him to fuck off, it’s Nigel Benn!” Needless to say Adrian turned his bullshit generator up to max, arriving back in the office still in one piece with the World Middleweight Champion in tow, suddenly the best of friends, coincidentally both West Ham fans, having a good chat, invited round the house etc!”
