about

At the time of the recording of this particular track, African Head Charge was somewhat of a ‘virtual group’ in the manner of many other On-U studio projects. Over time however it became the sole focus of percussionist and On-U mainstay Bonjo Iyabinghi Noah. Their debut album, My Life In A Hole In The Ground was a sly swipe at Brian Eno and David Byrne’s contemporaneous My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts, though by the sound of things Sherwood had taken Eno’s “vision of a psychedelic Africa” concept at least semi-seriously. The follow-up Environmental Studies was an extremely warped dub set, existing in some weird imagined mid-point between Pere Ubu and King Tubby. Incorporating some Duane Eddy-style guitar twang courtesy of Crucial Tony amongst the reverberating percussion, “In A Trap” adds a Spaghetti Western twist to the already skewed dynamics.
